Installs, maintains, tests and repairs diesel engines and related mechanical systems on marine vessels, including transmissions, generators and steering mechanisms.
Typical tasks and duties
Marine Diesel Mechanic may perform the following tasks:
- diagnosing mechanical and related electrical faults in marine engines, gearboxes and components
- removing, dismantling, inspecting and reinstalling engine and transmission assemblies
- repairing or replacing worn and defective mechanical parts
- performing scheduled servicing such as lubrication, oil changes and engine tune-ups
- reassembling engines and mechanical systems after repairs
- testing and adjusting repaired or installed components for correct operation
- using diagnostic equipment and technical information to investigate faults
