Health Information Manager plans, develops, implements and manages health information services, such as patient information systems, and clinical and administrative data, to meet the medical, legal, ethical and administrative requirements of health care delivery.

Health information managers may perform the following tasks:

  • plan and develop health information systems for various types of healthcare facilities, including computerised patient identification systems, coding and analysis of diseases and procedures, and the design of health record forms
  • revise and test the effectiveness of existing health information record services in hospitals and other healthcare facilities
  • develop and implement new policies and procedures for handling health information in accordance with professional ethics, institutional requirements and relevant legislation, including the Freedom of Information Act
  • select, supervise and manage staff
  • instruct health record service and other staff in the policies and procedures associated with the control, use and retrieval of health information
  • develop in-service training programmes for health record and other health professional staff
  • control the transfer of relevant health service data to state health departments
  • perform management functions such as workplace design, financial planning, budgetary control, quality assurance and selection of equipment and supplies
  • assist with medical research and healthcare projects.

This occupation belongs to Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) . STSOL consists of the list of the occupations which are high in demand in Australia. If you want to apply for Australia sponsored Permanent Residency (subclass 190) your occupation must be listed in the relevant STSOL list and you must have an invitation/sponsorship from the state government. This list is also a part of the Australia Point system. If eligible, you can live and work in Australia for an indefinite period of time.

Health Information Manager is classified as Group B occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group B occupations are the following :

  • Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
  • Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with an additional qualification at least Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
  • Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree without a highly relevant field of study and at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years;

According to Vetassess, if you have pre-qualification employment and if all of your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF bachelor degree level , you are required to have five years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.
